Adventure Open - CrossCountry Competition 2007

Name:

Dobrostan

Proper wind directions:

SE-E-NE-N

Height:

750 m altitude difference, 1300m MSL

Type of flying:

Cross-country, thermal

Season of flight:

The best conditions are from the early spring to the beginning of the summer. The wind direction is usually east and is appropriate for good cross-country tasks to the West. During unstable days the convective clouds encourage the conditions without making them risky. The thermals are usually smooth and not too strong, since the flyable mountain slopes are not south oriented.

Take off:

The start is next to the GSM tower, which is visible from most of the road up to Dobrostan (but not visible from the very center). NE from the village there is a rocket launcher /against thunderstorms/ which is easily recognizable by its light-conductors. There is a dirt road to the rocket launch site from the village's main square, which is accessible by normal cars. You can park your car next to the rocket launch site and continue up the hill on the dirt road by foot – it takes less than 5 minutes to get to the start. Getting to the very top with a normal car is a bit tricky, though often practiced by the local pilots. There are no problems whatsoever to reach the start using a 4x4 vehicle.

Getting there:

Head south from Plovdiv to Asenovgrad. Once you get in Asenovgrad, follow the signs towards Kardjali. The first village after Asenovgrad is called Cherven. Right at the very end of the village, turn right towards the mountain (follow the sign “Dobrostan”). Right after the turn, look up towards the mountain top and a little bit to the left – there is a tall tower – Globul's GSM tower; the start is next to it. Pass villages Gornoslav and Oreshec – at the end of Oreshec there is a Y turn, turn right to the village of Dobrostan (follow the sign). The road is asphalt and in good condition.
The trains to Asenovgrad are running every hour from Plovdiv 's Railway Station.
The busses to Asenovgrad run every half an hour from the South Bus Station.
Twice a day there is a bus from Asenovgrad to Dobrostan, but the hours are inconvenient for flying.
A taxi from Asenovgrad to Dobrostan costs about 15 to 20 levas in one direction.

Landing place:

Right before the sign of Gornoslav on the way to Dobrostan, on the left side of the road, there is a loan which is good for landing. There are lots of other places to land all the way along the road back to Asenovgrad.

Flight directions:

The best direction for flying is north to Asenovgrad and then west towards Sofia .

Risks:

High turbulence in front of the mountain when there are western winds.
A military shooting ground between Cherven and the mountain. Used during the working days only and clearly audible when in use.
It is very important to be aware about the forming of convective clouds from the SW because the development of the clouds can be fast and unpredictable.
When the E wind is too strong (up to 8m/s) it is almost impossible to go out of the mountain.
When the wind is N passing Asenovgrad can be dangerous at low attitude.

Closest hospital:
À Asenovgrad; Plovdiv 's hospitals are recommended
